Progeria is a genetic disorder that accelerates the aging process and causes the death of the person at a young age. The average age of the person suffering from Progeria is 13 years and the death could be caused by age related diseases like heart attack and stroke. Even thought there is no treatment for Progeria, a study of this disease can help in understanding age related problems like strokes and heart attack. These age related diseases account for more than one-third of the total deaths in North America.

According to medical director of The Progeria Research Foundation, Dr. Leslie Gordon, the disease will help them understand how exercise and diet can have an impact on the aging process. It will also help in understanding the impact of heart disease and heart attack on the age of the person.

In a recent study it was found that a protein called progerin increases at the person grows old. Children who suffered Progeria who died at an early age had very high levels of progerin. These levels where similar to those found in people who are very old. The doctors are also trying to find out why children with Progeria do not show signs of aging but show the same levels of organ degeneration that can be found in old people.
